چکیده

The challenge of developing high-quality ideas as the basis new goods and services is an important topic that coincides with companies’ rapid development these products. In response, firms increasingly rely on online ideation platforms for contests to optimize their employees’ creative power. This optimization requires a profound understanding contests’ underlying mechanisms, specifically participants’ innovative behavior contributes generating, elaborating, championing based each ideator's effort distribution, namely behavioral patterns. Our analysis ideators’ patterns relationship idea success consists two steps. First, we combine contest theory literature derive eight types in contests—clustered into three categories generation, elaboration, championing—that represent required efforts compete successfully. Second, use unique empirical sample, which combines platform evaluation data corporate R&D survey data, received few days before contest's closure, analyze between invested dimensions success. results show more does not necessarily lead better results. such extensive submission (“spamming”) inspiration (“copying”), could be wasted even has adverse effects However, especially provides strong possibilities increase

A model of extracellular enzymes in free-living microbes: which strategy pays off?

An initial modeling approach was applied to analyze how a single, nonmotile, free-living, heterotrophic bacterial cell may optimize the deployment of its extracellular enzymes. Free-living cells live in a dilute and complex substrate field, and to gain enough substrate, their extracellular enzymes must be utilized efficiently. The model revealed that surface-attached and free enzymes generate u...

Asymmetric Division: Motor Persistence Pays off

A new study shows that an antagonistic force model can explain a number of complex mitotic spindle movements in the first mitosis of the Caenorhabditis elegans embryo by simply assuming that cortical force generators become increasingly persistent in their interaction with microtubules during mitosis.

Energetic materials: flexible approach pays off.

Despite rapid advances in the design and fabrication of miniaturized sensors and devices, their practical applications have been impeded by the lack of suitably miniscule sources of electrical power. Indeed, the generation and storage of electrical energy for mobile devices and systems is one of the most urgent challenges in science and engineering today. Microand nanoscale devices — such as ul...
